Team Spotlight: Alex Clark, Implementation Consultant

Today, we talk to Implementation Consultant, Alex Clark.

Hi Alex, tell us a bit about your background.

I started my working career by joining the British Army straight out of secondary school at 16, which looking back sounds extremely young but it didn’t at the time. I served just shy of 6 years, and completed a 7 month tour of Afghanistan in 2012 as a UAS Pilot.

Growing up in the 90s and experiencing the fast-paced advancements of tech from cassettes, SEGA, dial up, to mp3 and so on… I had an interest in computers in general. I kept that interest and after leaving the Army, I had my first experience of how a support desk operates, eventually managing a UK team & supporting 4 software packages that were internationally utilised.

After gaining some very valuable experience in management I moved to a more implementation/training focused role for a Veterinary organisation and found an appreciation for helping others in what is generally a stressful time for businesses. Over time I have learnt that having a strong skillset of technological understanding, business process and being an approachable people person is not something you can learn easily.

Fast forward through a couple more role changes, I’m at Clue as an Implementation Consultant and I thoroughly enjoy the experiences and challenges this role brings.

What does your role at Clue entail?

I’m an Implementation Consultant at Clue, part of the Professional Services team. The team is responsible as a driving force behind building strong client relationships, leading and executing implementations, gathering process and configuration requirements, troubleshooting any technical hiccups, leading on developing project plans for clients, providing comprehensive training, and above all, guaranteeing client satisfaction and project success.

What inspired you to pursue the career you have today?

Tough question! I touched on it previously but I became aware that having the ability to not only understand business, process, project management & IT, but to also be able to work with people from all kinds of backgrounds, personalities & attitudes was not something you learn easily.

I found I could help turn one of the most stressful experiences for staff (the implementation of a new software package) into a much less stressful experience, if not an enjoyable one. It’s a great feeling when you can show a person how much easier their day-to-day work life is going to be, and they finally realise it.

What about working at Clue motivates you?

Working for good! There are no 2 days the same and every customer is slightly different, but everyone is moving towards the same goal… Protecting society from harm. That’s what makes it so exciting. I have learnt so much in this role about different organisations, and how they contribute in their own way to protecting society. It’s absolutely brilliant and I respect every person that makes even the smallest bit of difference for good.

What’s your secret talent no one knows about?

I learnt to juggle on tour.

I also went cold turkey from smoking 20-30 a day out there – but that’s less of a talent, and more of a wise decision.

Tell me something about you that most people don’t know.

I married my childhood sweetheart. She was my first girlfriend when I was 5. We drifted apart as we got older but now we’re 32 years old and celebrating our 10th year of marriage with 1 lovely daughter.

In terms of successes, which accomplishments are you most proud of?

The things that immediately come to mind: Running a half marathon, Benching 100KG the first time, Placing 1st (U21) in a Royal Artillery Skiing Comp, completing a tour of Afghan & of course being a Dad to a fantastic little girl.
